**Thiruvananthapuram:** The Kerala government is preparing for a major overhaul of sports administration in the state, with the Sports Department moving to replace the existing Sports Council with a Sports Authority of Kerala. The proposed authority will be under the complete control of the government. The Sports Department has also begun steps to impose stricter controls on sports associations, with six organisations receiving show-cause notices for failing to submit activity reports for previous years.

The proposed changes are based on the department’s assessment that a significant number of sports organisations represented in the existing Sports Councils are not functioning in a manner suited to the development of sports. The government is preparing to amend the Kerala Sports Act, 2000, as part of its plan to restructure sports administration.

A report stating that Kerala is the only state in the country continuing with the Sports Council system has also strengthened the case for the proposed changes. According to the Sports Department’s plan, the Sports Authority of Kerala is intended to replace the State Sports Council in order to eliminate political influence from sports administration.

Under the proposed system, the leadership of the authority will comprise members directly nominated by the government instead of representatives elected from sports associations and political leaders. This would place the authority under the complete control of the government.

Along with the proposed administrative restructuring, action has already begun against various sports organisations in the state. As the first step, show-cause notices were issued to six associations that have not submitted activity reports for previous years.

The organisations that received notices are the Kerala Badminton Shuttle Association, Kerala State Ball Badminton Association, Kerala Table Tennis Association, Kerala State Archery Association, Kerala Sports Council of the Deaf, and Kerala State Powerlifting Association.

Of the 48 sports organisations in the state, only 37 have submitted their activity reports so far. The Sports Department and the minister expect that the proposed Sports Authority will bring greater discipline and efficiency to Kerala’s sports administration and its various governing bodies.
